Situated amidst the lush, green scenic landscapes of Thane, ‘Ulka’—meaning ‘the meteoroid’— is a thoughtfully designed three-bedroom home that redefines compact urban living through seamless flow, gentle curves, and an earthy colour palette. Designed by D+U Architects, this residence belongs to a nuclear family of four (a couple and their two sons). The inspiration behind Ulka, as the home is affectionately called, was to create a space that reflects their cultural roots. The design strikes a balance between traditional and modern elements, featuring athungi tiles, classic wooden mouldings, and more. The calm, muted earthy tones unify the living and

When the team began the project, the apartment was a newly purchased space. They completely dismantled the kitchen to create an inviting area that balanced openness with functionality. This also helped to introduce light into the otherwise dim dining area. Brass accents and cherished family possessions added further layers of cultural richness. The goal of the project was to showcase the client’s love of art and valued belongings by paying homage to their roots while creating practical spaces.
In the master bedroom, the client desired a rich aesthetic, which is achieved by the upholstered headboard with columns, reflecting a traditional style. A forest green shade dominates the colour palette of the room.
The children’s bedroom features a mustard yellow and grey colour palette, which uplifts the ambience and gives the space a youthful, toddler-friendly vibe. The bunk above the beds was added to provide the boys with their own play area.
The guest bed cum study is a cosy, warm space created by focusing on a variety of textiles. Comfortable, compact bedding with integrated storage has been used to maintain a clear, uncluttered layout, making the room feel inviting without being cramped. A bookshelf that arches above the desk, a grey-blue ceiling, a sleek wardrobe, and a well-placed mirror ensure this room remains the quiet part of the house.
Ulka’ is thus a home where tradition reigns, and every corner tells a tale. This home has been crafted not only with walls and spaces but also with care, imagination, and the intention to nurture life within it. At D+U Architects, we—Ar. Disha Nayar and Ar. Umal Patil—have been practicing for seven years with the belief that every house possesses its own soul. We hope this one will stand as a warm embrace, welcoming its inhabitants to weave their stories within.
