Vasudev Residence, designed by Naveen G.J, founder and principal designer of De Square Architects, is a 4800sqft modern house with Chettinad-style features. The house is designed with a contemporary C shaped layout, with a garden at the front, back, and side of it. Light, ventilation, and green space are at the core of the home’s concept with every room looking out on to a garden. Incorporating unique architectural details and patterns adds to the visual interest of the façade, thereby creating a sense of intrigue. The elevation is in modern style with large cantilevers and overhangs. It uses a combination of white walls and reddish brown stones.
A central courtyard inspired by Chettinad architecture surrounds the house. Located in the middle of the building, the courtyard is a rectangle with a double height space and a skylight at the top. It is treated as a dry garden. The courtyard provides a view of the external garden. While the interior is designed in the "Chettinad-style", the exterior is modern with large cantilevers and projections. Above the courtyard are wind turbines hidden by wooden batons that cool the area.
In order to ensure that all areas have views to different green zones, the entrance and living room are oriented towards the front garden, the kitchen to the central garden, and the dining room and bedroom to the back one. Moreover, a blend of modern and traditional style is applied to the interiors with wood that draws from natural warm hues. On the ground floor, there is more open space and a study on top of the car park as a mezzanine with a large balcony providing a front view. First floor features two bedrooms, an entertainment room, and a family room. Throughout the living and dining areas, wood accents adorn the home.
Soft browns and neutrals define the living space's timeless mood. This living room features an understated colour palette of warm browns and neutrals that defines a timelessness mood. Keeping with the rustic ambiance of the living spaces, the master bedroom features clean lines, soothing hues, and sleek forms with a solid wooden bed, wooden flooring, and white walls with one highlighted wall adding an element of sophistication. Light, neutral curtains frame the windows, allowing natural light to enter the room. On the other hand, a playful palette infused with woods and neural colours adds a touch of elegance to the kid's room and creates a cohesive visual narrative throughout.
Located next to the living area, the kitchen and dining areas combine function and style. The open layout creates an inviting atmosphere for family meals and gatherings. Cabinet panelling and warm wooden accents add subtle warmth to the room.
Therefore, this project illustrates how to design a house that balances indoor and outdoor living and celebrating the harmonious blend of old and new without sacrificing the warmth; a theme common throughout this Bangalore home. This project features a high level of detail and diversity in its design approach. It imbues both an old-world charm and an elegant touch of contemporary design f
