Nestled on the first floor of a building that has stood in Bangalore's central area for four decades, this apartment emanates an enduring charm characterized by high ceilings and distinctive angular features. Despite its captivating allure, the passage of time has introduced challenges stemming from the aging infrastructure, particularly in the realms of electrical and plumbing systems. The inhabitant of this unique space is a dynamic single mother deeply engrossed in the world of advertising. She possesses a vision for her living quarters, one that is intricately woven into the fabric of her creative lifestyle.

In order to bring this vision to life, a comprehensive approach was undertaken to reimagine the layout and functionality of the apartment. Repositioning bedroom access emerged as a key element in the pursuit of heightened privacy and spatial efficiency. This adjustment was complemented by the creation of a walk-in wardrobe, a space designed to seamlessly integrate with the resident's daily routines and aesthetic preferences. The bathroom underwent a thoughtful expansion to incorporate a bath tub, and the kitchen, a focal point of many homes, was enlarged to enhance both its practicality and aesthetic appeal. A utility space was added by taking space from the second bedroom balcony. The sons bedroom is compact with its defined sleeping zone and study zone. The fluted glass and cane sliding folding partition is a very significant design element that defines the formal living and entertainment area. The entry area is also marked by a shoe rack partition with stained glass.

Throughout this transformative process, sustainability was elevated to a central role, woven into the very foundation of the redesign. Antique furniture and doors, carefully curated for their personal significance and enduring beauty, found a new home within the apartment.  Kota flooring in most parts of the house bring earthy feel to the space. Use of black and white vitrified tiles in some areas and as inlays helps in breaking the monotony and also connects with the colonial feel which was dominant in the clients ancestral home in Calcutta. This conscious integration of elements from the past not only contributed to sustainability but also added a layer of character and history to the living space.

Personalization emerged as another guiding principle, allowing the apartment to become a true reflection of its inhabitant's unique tastes and preferences. Curated art pieces and carefully selected photographs adorned the walls, infusing the space with a sense of individuality and storytelling. Each piece served as a visual testament to the resident's journey, values, and personal narrative.

The result of this meticulous design journey is a harmonious fusion of sustainability, personalization, and earthy aesthetics—a living space that stands as a testament to conscientious living. The distinctive blend of antique elements and contemporary design not only mirrors the client's discerning taste but also serves as a statement of commitment to environmentally conscious living.

Sustainability, in this context, goes beyond the mere integration of antique elements. It extends to the very core of the apartment's functionality, influencing decisions related to energy consumption, water usage, and material selection. The aged infrastructure, while presenting challenges, became an opportunity for thoughtful upgrades. The electrical and plumbing systems were not just replaced but redesigned with an eye on energy efficiency and water conservation. This approach not only addressed immediate concerns but positioned the apartment as a model for sustainable living in an urban context.

The walk-in wardrobe, a bespoke addition to the living space, exemplifies the fusion of personalization and sustainability. Crafted with an understanding of the resident's lifestyle, it serves as both a functional storage solution and a curated display of wardrobe essentials. Sustainable materials and practices were employed in its construction, aligning with the overarching theme of environmentally conscious living.

The bathroom, subjected to expansion, became a canvas for innovative sustainable practices. Water-efficient fixtures and energy-saving lighting were seamlessly integrated, ensuring that luxury and environmental responsibility coexisted. The enlarged kitchen, often considered the heart of a home, underwent a transformation that extended beyond aesthetics. Energy-efficient appliances and sustainable materials were chosen to not only elevate the visual appeal but also align with the broader commitment to sustainable living.

The inclusion of antique furniture and doors is not merely an aesthetic choice; it is a deliberate step towards preserving the past and reducing the environmental impact of contemporary manufacturing. Each piece tells a story, adding a layer of history to the living space. Beyond their visual appeal, these elements contribute to the circular economy, embodying the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Personalization, as a design principle, extends beyond the visual realm. It encompasses the functionality of the space, ensuring that every nook and corner is tailored to the inhabitant's needs and preferences. The repositioning of bedroom access, for instance, goes beyond a mere spatial adjustment. It reflects a nuanced understanding of the resident's desire for privacy and tranquillity, acknowledging the importance of a space that aligns with her daily rhythms and creative pursuits.

Curated art and photographs, strategically placed throughout the apartment, serve as windows into the resident's world. Each piece is a deliberate choice, reflecting not just aesthetic preferences but a deeper connection to memories, experiences, and values. This infusion of personal elements transforms the living space into a canvas of self-expression, where every corner tells a story and every wall carries the imprint of the resident's journey.

In conclusion, the redesign of this forty-year-old apartment in Bangalore's central area is a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design. By seamlessly integrating sustainability, personalization, and earthy aesthetics, the space has evolved into more than just a residence. It is a conscious statement—a reflection of the resident's commitment to a lifestyle that values both timeless charm and contemporary responsibility. As a dynamic single mother immersed in the world of advertising, she has not just crafted a living space; she has curated an environment that aligns with her values, nurtures her creativity, and stands as a beacon of conscientious living in an urban landscape
