Soulful Opulence by The DesignBOX (Rajat Kabra & Shilpa Kabra)

On the lookout for a warm and comforting home, Pawan Chandak’s only brief was to create a space that feels easy to unwind in after a hard day’s work. “I don’t want a show flat or a hotel room. I want my child to have open space to play and move around freely,” he specified laying importance on a clutter-free space. The three-bedroom-hall-kitchen house occupies 2,300 sq. ft. space in Mumbai’s Parel area and has been designed to accommodate all of client’s needs. The architects were left with the tough task to fit all the requirements of their client in the passage along with having to reduce the linearity of the space and make way for natural sunlight.

The three-bedroom-hall-kitchen house occupies 2,300 sq. ft. space in Mumbai’s Parel area and has been designed to accommodate all of our client’s needs beginning with a thorough analysis that revealed many setbacks. An elongated passage with bedrooms on one side and the storeroom, powder room and prayer room on the other was the central connection, which made it dark and dingy. The kitchen too was sandwiched between the living room and a relatively large utility space reducing natural light in the kitchen.

The architects were left with the tough task to fit all the requirements of their client in the passage along with having to reduce the linearity of the space and make way for natural sunlight.

To achieve this, they broke down the storeroom, temple room and powder room created by the developer to build a square foyer in the centre of the passage. This enabled them to break the linearity. They also created an octagonal cut-out, which brought in ample natural light, in the kid’s bedroom and doubles up as a fun little sit-out space or reading nook – a novelty in a city like Mumbai.

Designed in complementing tones of brown, beige and blue the living room has several interesting elements. The exquisite marble flooring, the complementing accent wall and the marble-finished dining table with plush chairs add an elegant appeal to the space while the royal blue couch lends a pop of colour that brings the space alive. The dining space is a mix of chairs and a space-saving bench to make enough room for everyone to be seated at the table and enjoy their meals together. The wood panels with lighting elevate the look giving the room a very warm and welcoming ambience with a minimalistic and clean approach.

The architects visited Hacker Kitchens and saw one of the prototype setups that they fell in love with - grey shutters with a backdrop of gold tiles. They were keen on using this for the client’s understated yet elegant home. The effect of gold tiles exuded luxury and was apt for this space so they asked Hacker Kitchens to install the kitchen while they handpicked similar materials to plan and execute the entire design.

When you look at the kitchen, you realise that it is not a typical platform with overhead storage. There is a break created in the overhead storage to give that aesthetic vibe of an open kitchen while the dining table is abutting to the platform. This enables the family to sit together and enjoy conversations even when food is being cooked and served to make this activity common and enjoyable.

The entire space has gone through a 360-degree transformation to finally evolve into a sophisticated and tastefully done abode that exudes elegance and royalty with all its wonderful elements. The owners of the house are also extremely pleased with the result.

The master bedroom initially had a small room attached to it provided as a walk-in wardrobe. This space however was dark with no ventilation or windows. The bathroom adjacent to this space had a small window so to balance out the layout and allow natural light to flow in evenly they broke the wall of the walk-in wardrobe area and created an open wardrobe. The wall adjacent to this area was also broken down and replaced with fixed glass for natural light to pass through. An advanced inbuilt roller blind system in the bath area made sure the client’s privacy wasn’t hampered too. This layout also helped in visually expanding the size of the master bedroom and giving an illusion of more space.

The architects also innovated with the hidden storage that camouflaged in plain sight within the wall and played with indirect lights on the headboard to create ambient lighting.

Another noteworthy feature of the house is the gorgeous balcony that has a mesmerizing view of the Mumbai skyline. To be able to sit and enjoy this view, a minimalistic high table accompanied by high chairs was created that will enable the inmates to enjoy the sunset while sipping on their coffee.

For the parent’s room, the clients wanted a bright, yet sophisticated look so the team chose colours like grey and pink for a subtle appearance. A grey textured wall was created accompanied by a headboard with ambient lighting and pink upholstery to add a pleasing character to the room.

Bedrooms are usually full of furniture leaving little to no space for kids to move around. To avoid this in the kid’s bedroom, a murphy bed has been made, which opens up with ease to become a full-fledged bedroom and gives adequate space for the kid to play around and use the entire floor space for various activities. A long but unique bookshelf has been created on one of the dead walls. This also has storage space for all the kid’s games and supplies along with a sliding partition over it that acts like a whiteboard for writing, drawing and colouring. The colour of the room was consciously kept mellow and non-stimulating which has a calming effect and cues the brain to start relaxing.
