URBAN HOME - BUSTLING METROPOLIS AT CHENNAI

OSCAR & PONNI ARCHITECTS – CHENNAI

The clients brief was to design an Italian classical style luxury home on the exterior and a contemporary interior. The client wanted the design of their home very personalized and should reflect a combination of memories, individual aspirations, and a lifetime of unique experiences.  As architects to this project our journey was as important as the final design destination.
The concept of exploration of different architectural characters, aspirations with passion and conviction helped us to be finally very rewarding by seeing the clients happiness with human happiness.  It was a result of integrating all the client’s needs and aspiration on the exterior and the interior of the built environment that good architecture and design is not merely a shell, but it is a complete environment that can deeply affect one’s life.

Nestled in the center of the T Nagar, Chennai the G R Residence offers a magical experience.  The plot extent is 104 feet by 60 feet.  The total built up area is around 16,000 sft comprising of Basement, ground, first and second floor. As T Nagar is a very busy street, and upon entering this gated property there is a good transition from the crowds and traffic into a more peaceful realm.  On the exterior we see majestic setting features of an Italian style luxury house with mature trees and beautiful vertical garden landscape at the entry portico.

As the site didn’t offer expansive views or vistas as architects we directed he focus inwards, by creating lofty grand spaces creating a self contained, insular and embracing environment.  As the clients were widely travelled and sophisticated people who spent a great deal of time in Italy over the years and admired the art, architecture and history enormously, they had felt a deep connection to reflect in the exterior architecture of their new home.
The entrance to the home is through a porch with a vertical garden opposite to solid teakwood door of contemporary design.  This leads to a foyer with linear design elements of furniture, lighting, Italian marble inlay and steel inlaid sliding door which leads to the formal living room.  The formal lounge has contemporary leather sofas with ultra-modern artifacts, entertainment units and paintings done by Architect Ponni.  The artifacts have been individually designed with a constructive interaction with the client.
The splash of color is the punch element in an otherwise sober color scheme.  The formal lounge leads to the double storeyed family area overlooking an elaborate pooja area and is characterized by an elaborate wooden ceiling.  The dining area also has a wood ceiling and Italian marble is used throughout. The bedrooms are voluminous and each has a separate lounge area and bed area.  The toilets also finished with Italian marble boast of chandeliers, showcases and inlays of contemporary motifs.  Each space - be it a toilet, bedroom, dining or living is distinctly different with a common material vocabulary of materials and design.
The exterior facades are wide and sprawling making the house appear larger than it really is.  Its basic footprint is rectangular, narrowing from front to back, allowing natural light to permeate the house, giving it a warm translucence.  The home is a statement of contemporary elegance and quiet understated luxury giving an ambience of peace in a bustling commercial quarter of Chennai city.
