Project Brief
At the outset of the design process for Vaatsalya, the clients were still defining the role this residence would play in their lives. Located on the quiet outskirts of Gandhidham, away from the urban core, the house held the potential to function either as a primary home or a secondary retreat - a place of respite from everyday rhythms. Rather than treating this ambiguity as a constraint, we embraced it as the foundation of the design. The intent was to create a home that evokes the experience of a holiday retreat while meeting the functional and practical needs of a permanent residence. The architecture and interiors therefore needed to reconcile two sensibilities: moments of exploration and delight alongside
spaces of calm, familiarity, and repose.

As the design evolved, the core concept was to create a form of luxury rooted not in material excess, but in the quality of spatial and lived experience. This is expressed through the effortless flow between rooms, intuitive movement throughout the home, and the ease with which everyday life unfolds. Every intervention - from the planning and material choices to the restrained detailing - contributes to a cohesive spatial narrative, giving the residence a quiet sense of character while ensuring that it remains refined, inviting, and purposeful. The landscape is a carefully curated experience for the clients who desired a continuous relationship with nature. Planted courts and gardens are positioned to remain visually and experientially present throughout the home, maintaining a constant dialogue between interiorand exterior. Layered vegetation further softens the built form and deepens this connection. The outdoor spaces - including the pool, deck, dining area, swing, and glasshouse - were designed as settings for everyday rituals, with the hope that they would encourage moments of gathering, reflection, and reconnection with family, nature, and a slower rhythm of living. The project ultimately finds its expression in how seamlessly it dissolves the boundary betweendesign intent and lived experience, becoming a natural extension of the family’s everyday life.Project Walkthrough

Vaatsalya unfolds as a carefully composed journey, where each space gradually reveals a distinct layer of materiality, light, and atmosphere. Rather than presenting itself all at once, the home is experienced as a sequence of moments - each transition thoughtfully designed to build upon the last, creating a cohesive yet evolving spatial narrative. The entry opens into a double-height volume where a strong sense of grandeur is immediately established. A sculptural element is paired with a sleek console, setting a refined yet expressive tone for the home. A walnut veneer wall adds warmth to the vertical expanse and visually connects to the main door, which is also finished in walnut and detailed with an organic carved pattern, creating a cohesive and welcoming threshold. From this entry sequence, the material narrative continues seamlessly into granite flooring that runs throughout the home, chosen over marble to reflect a design approach rooted in material honesty and spatial experience rather than conventional luxury. This flooring extends into a long passage where a geometric green-tile composition breaks the linearity of the space. A sculptural console with a glass top allows the pattern beneath to remain visible, while a full-height fixed glass window at the end frames the landscape and draws natural light deep into the interior.

The living room is designed as a warm, shared family space anchored by a walnut-clad ceiling that adds intimacy to the volume. Custom furniture with soft, organic forms enhances comfort, while tactile upholstery and finishes reinforce a relaxed material language. Framed views of the landscape and customised artwork that echoes the room’s curves and tones integrate the interior with its surroundings. The drawing room introduces a more expressive palette through muted green and soft mauveseating balanced with off-white upholstery. Multiple sculptural light fixtures add layers of visualinterest and a sense of occasion, while large windows maintain a strong visual connection to the landscape, softening the room’s more formal character.
The ground-floor powder bathroom adopts a darker, more dramatic material palette. Precious stone cladding defines the lower walls and continues as the mirror frame, while textured black paint grounds the upper surfaces. Gold-toned accents and the natural variation of the stone introduce depth, richness, and a refined, jewel-like quality within the compact space. The parents’ bedroom, designed for flexible use as a guest room, follows a restrained grey palette. A hand-painted mural behind the bed introduces a more expressive surface, where rich brown tones create depth and movement across the wall. These warmer hues are subtly echoed in accessories such as the bedside lamps, bringing cohesion and softness to anotherwise calm composition.

The son’s bedroom on the first floor is designed as a warm and intimate retreat. Walnut flooring establishes a rich foundation, softened further by a thick wool rug in neutral tones featuring an organic, soft pattern that gently anchors the space without overpowering it. Timber rafters across the ceiling continue the rhythm and warmth, reinforcing the room’s grounded character. A leather-clad dresser adds a familiar, vintage sensibility, balancing the otherwise contemporary language of the room. The artwork in this space holds deep personal significance, as it was chosen for its emotional resonance rather than purely aesthetic value.Spanning two adjoining walls, the composition extends visually around the corner, creating a continuous narrative that mirrors memory and movement.Another bedroom on the first floor explores a richer material expression through a curved upholstered bed set against deeply grained wooden panels. The veneer wall functions as both backdrop and visual anchor, with its natural patterns adding depth and a sense of quiet drama.Sheer curtains soften incoming daylight, diffusing it gently across the surfaces and enhancing the room’s calm atmosphere, which is defined by warmth, texture, and material richness.Across Vaatsalya, private spaces are shaped through material sensitivity, tactile detail, and personal artistic expression, while shared areas introduce more variation through colour, pattern, and sculptural elements. Despite these shifts, a consistent design language ties the home together, creating a cohesive spatial journey where each room maintains its own identity within a unified whole.
