Architecture –Itameshi:
Situated on the rooftop of a commercial development on Sindhu Bhavan Road in Ahmedabad, Itameshi is conceived as an immersive hospitality destination where architecture becomes an extension of the restaurant's culinary philosophy. Inspired by the fusion of Italian and Japanese cuisine, the project translates two distinct cultural identities into a cohesive architectural language that is contemporary, welcoming, and experiential. Rather than borrowing literal stylistic references, the design draws from the shared values of craftsmanship, proportion, material honesty, and spatial balance that define both cultures.

Occupying approximately 2,963 square feet, the restaurant is organized as a carefully choreographed sequence of indoor and outdoor spaces that gradually unfold throughout the dining journey. The architecture encourages movement, exploration, and moments of pause, allowing every transition to become part of the overall experience. The rooftop setting provided an opportunity to dissolve conventional boundaries between built form and landscape, resulting in an environment where architecture, planting, and open sky exist in continuous dialogue.

The planning strategy is centered around a series of interconnected zones, each offering a distinct spatial character while remaining visually connected. Guests arrive through a sculptural entrance that establishes the architectural identity before gradually transitioning into landscaped pathways, intimate indoor dining areas, and expansive outdoor seating courts. This sequence creates a layered experience that encourages discovery rather than revealing the restaurant in a single moment.

The outdoor terrace forms the heart of the project. Conceived as more than an open seating area, it functions as a carefully composed architectural landscape where built elements and planting work together to shape the dining environment. A central landscape island anchors the space, organizing circulation while softening the geometry of the terrace. Trees, shrubs, and integrated planting beds become architectural components that define seating clusters, introduce privacy, and establish a constantly evolving visual relationship between guests and nature.
Arched architectural forms become one of the defining elements of the project. Reinterpreted through clean contemporary proportions, these openings frame views, guide movement, and establish visual continuity between different dining zones. Rather than functioning solely as decorative features, the arches create rhythm throughout the restaurant, reinforcing the transition between interior and exterior while subtly referencing both Mediterranean architecture and traditional Japanese gateways through abstraction rather than imitation.

The architecture is intentionally restrained, allowing proportion, light, and materiality to shape the spatial experience. Layered screens, carefully positioned partitions, and framed openings establish varying degrees of openness without interrupting visual continuity. This creates intimate dining environments while preserving the spaciousness expected from a rooftop destination.

Responding to Ahmedabad's climate was fundamental to the architectural planning. Landscaped edges, shaded seating areas, strategically positioned architectural elements, and generous open-air spaces contribute to thermal comfort while strengthening the connection between architecture and nature. The result is an environment that remains inviting throughout different times of the day and changing seasons.

Materiality plays a significant role in expressing the restaurant's identity. Natural timber, textured plaster, stone surfaces, black metal detailing, handcrafted finishes, and landscape elements are layered to create warmth and depth without unnecessary ornamentation. The restrained palette allows architectural forms and spatial composition to become the primary focus while providing a timeless backdrop for the dining experience.

Craftsmanship is expressed through bespoke architectural elements integrated throughout the project. Hand-painted murals, custom-designed partitions, carefully detailed screens, and sculptural entrance features become permanent components of the architecture rather than decorative additions. These interventions enrich the spatial narrative while reinforcing the restaurant's cultural identity through contemporary artistic expression.

Spatial flexibility was another important consideration during planning. The restaurant accommodates varying group sizes through a combination of booth seating, communal tables, intimate corners, and outdoor dining clusters. Each seating arrangement has been positioned to maximize views, maintain comfortable circulation, and create distinct dining experiences without fragmenting the overall architectural composition.

Natural and artificial lighting work together to define the character of the space. During the day, sunlight filters through landscaped edges and framed openings, creating changing patterns of light and shadow across architectural surfaces. As evening arrives, warm ambient lighting transforms the restaurant into a vibrant hospitality destination. Decorative fixtures, concealed illumination, and landscape lighting enhance architectural features while maintaining a calm and inviting atmosphere.

The transition between indoor and outdoor spaces has been designed to feel effortless. Rather than treating the terrace as an extension of the interior, both environments possess distinct identities while remaining connected through consistent materiality, architectural rhythm, and landscape integration. This balance allows guests to experience different moods within a single hospitality destination.

Attention extends beyond the primary dining areas into every part of the restaurant. Even the washrooms continue the architectural narrative through bespoke artwork, carefully layered materials, dramatic lighting, and immersive detailing, ensuring that every space contributes meaningfully to the overall guest experience. Itameshi demonstrates how architecture can become an active participant in hospitality by shaping movement, atmosphere, and memory. Through the seamless integration of landscape, contemporary architectural forms, crafted materials, and cultural influences, the project creates a dining environment where cuisine, architecture, and experience exist as a unified whole. The result is a rooftop destination that feels sophisticated yet approachable, celebrating the meeting of two culinary traditions through thoughtful spatial design rather than literal interpretation.

Interior:

The interior design of Itameshi reflects the restaurant's unique fusion of Japanese and Italian culinary traditions through a contemporary language of materiality, craftsmanship, and atmosphere. Rather than directly replicating cultural motifs, the design draws inspiration from the warmth of Italian hospitality and the quiet refinement of Japanese interiors, creating a cohesive environment that feels both sophisticated and welcoming.

A carefully curated material palette establishes the character of the restaurant. Natural wood, textured plaster, black metal detailing, handcrafted finishes, rich upholstery, and stone surfaces combine to create a layered interior with warmth and depth. The colour palette of deep reds, charcoal blacks, warm timber, and muted neutrals reinforces the restaurant's bold yet balanced identity while creating a memorable visual experience.

Bespoke hand-painted murals are integrated throughout the interiors, becoming an essential part of the spatial narrative rather than decorative artwork. Each mural introduces moments of storytelling, enriching the dining experience while reinforcing the cultural fusion that defines the restaurant. Layered architectural screens, fluted glass, and textured surfaces further contribute to the richness of the interiors by creating depth, privacy, and visual rhythm.

Furniture has been custom designed to support a variety of dining experiences. Japanese-inspired booth seating introduces intimate spaces that encourage conversation and comfort, while larger communal tables accommodate groups without compromising the overall sense of openness. Every seating arrangement has been carefully proportioned to provide generous comfort while maintaining efficient circulation throughout the restaurant.

Lighting plays a central role in shaping the ambience. Soft globe pendants, concealed architectural lighting, feature fixtures, and landscape illumination work together to create a warm, inviting atmosphere that evolves naturally from day to night. Light highlights material textures, enhances artwork, and reinforces the layered quality of the interiors without overpowering the architecture.

The outdoor dining court extends the interior design language into the landscape. Flooring patterns, custom seating, integrated planting, and architectural elements were developed as a unified composition, ensuring the terrace feels like a natural continuation of the restaurant rather than a separate outdoor space. Landscape becomes an active design element, introducing softness, shade, and seasonal variation while enhancing the overall dining experience.

Even the washrooms continue the design narrative through bold artistic interventions, bespoke finishes, dramatic lighting, and carefully composed material palettes. Rather than being treated as purely functional spaces, they become immersive environments that reinforce the restaurant's identity and attention to detail.

Together, these carefully considered elements create interiors that are refined, immersive, and memorable. Every material, artwork, lighting feature, and piece of furniture contributes to a cohesive hospitality experience where architecture and interiors complement the restaurant's culinary philosophy, allowing Itameshi to offer guests a dining experience that extends well beyond the meal itself.
