Fraudulent Claims of Being an Architect: Caught

The Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Karnataka Chapter, has alerted the Council of Architecture (COA), the statutory body for architects in India, about an individual named Vikram Talreja who has falsely claimed to be an architect. According to the Architects Act of 1972, only those with the requisite education and degree can use the title "Architect." Mr. Talreja has allegedly managed and handled various buildings over the years without the necessary technical or managerial skills, potentially endangering public safety.

Authorities discovered that the Architect Registration Certificate Mr. Talreja submitted at his workplace, bearing the registration number CA/2011/53335, actually belongs to his ex-colleague, Mr. Umit Saini of Uttar Pradesh. Under Sections 36 and 37 of the Architects Act, 1972, Mr. Vikram Talreja has been issued a notice to cease presenting himself as an architect. The forged documents are currently under scrutiny by the police and other legal proceedings have been initiated.

Mr. Vikram Talreja, who falsely claims to have graduated from the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) in 2005, has been verified by the Department of Architecture of UVCE. He practiced and claimed to have worked for various architectural firms for over 19 years.

Ms. Komathi P, a colleague of Mr. Vikram Talreja at Concorde Group, Bengaluru, has accused him of workplace harassment, citing his bullying behavior and refusal to engage in technical discussions and endorse design drawings, which caused her considerable distress and led to her resignation.

Ar. B. R. Mohan, Chairman of the IIA Karnataka Chapter, emphasized and urged the importance of verifying the credentials of potential employees, a step often overlooked by large companies with active HR departments. He stressed the necessity of checking their Architect Registration number on the COA website before hiring or engaging them in projects. Neglecting this verification process can lead to serious consequences and compromise buildings, projects, and public safety at large.
