COST EFFECTIVE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN IN SYNC WITH THE ENVIRONS
Located in the middle of a lush mango orchard, this modest farmhouse has been built using maximum waste / unused materials and improvising as per availability on site.
The design approach opens the major living spaces to the garden looking towards the farmland beyond. The living is designed as a central node in the house, which opens up to the verandah allowing a seamless view of the mango orchards. The orientation welcomes the mild morning sun also protecting the living areas from direct heat. The layout is to maximize the visual connection, with the openings and sit-outs articulately orienting to the lush green outdoors. Services and entrances are planned in a manner so as not to encroach to the privacy of the inhabitants.
Complimenting the serenity of the site, a cost effective and sustainable design was developed. Each natural material used has been explored to its fullest potential. Exposed brick walls, catching the play of natural light are used; some walls staggered to add edge aesthetics appeal but mainly are to conceal services. Continuing with the natural look, materials like polished concrete, sandstone and Kota are used as flooring, interspersed with stone jams and projections.
Windows have sandstone frames in keeping with the character of the home while adding value to the aesthetics. Large windows in the bedroom offer an enchanting view of the orchard trees outside. The kitchen window has direct vision of the walkway to enable a view of the visitors. Large folding doors and windows in the living and dining spaces allow ample light and breeze, especially needed in the hot climate of the site.
The use of wrought iron furniture along with table and bench made of locally available wood in the living and dining area blend well with the entire theme.
The 4 feet deep splash pool in the patio helps cooling the home. It is smartly kept covered and a large cut-out in the ceiling above acts as a funnel to suck out hot air and act as a natural temperature controller.
The double height entrance foyer overlooking the staircase landing creates a sense of openness with a striking contrast between the blue terrazzo flooring and the exposed brick wall with a unique pointing pattern.
The bedrooms and kitchen are minimalistic and functional with crisp straight lines making sure they are easy to maintain and clean. The large openings with a view of the farm also bring in ample light and make these spaces look airy. The materials used here are again in keeping with the natural theme - for instance beds having a brick base and a rustic wooden bed back.
The entire farmhouse has been designed to make optimum use of natural elements available, integrating them in a manner which uplifts the inherent quality of each material yet amalgamating it to create a rustic yet modern home.
