Himmatnagar, Gujarat, India
By Architerio. AhmedabadThe vision for A Brick Courtyard House was to design a multi-generational family residence where spatial generosity is achieved not through area, but through intention. The concept was rooted in a single governing idea — the axis — a straight line of movement that sequences the home from entry to courtyard, giving every space a clear purpose and position within the whole. The design team responded to a compact 45 × 100 ft east-facing plot in Himmatnagar by using double-height volumes, a central courtyard, and a disciplined sectional strategy to produce a home that feels expansive, light-filled, and deeply livable across generations.
Spatial Configuration & Execution
With a plot measuring 45 × 100 ft, the layout was
designed to maximize spatial experience through careful zoning, vertical
organization, and a continuous axis of movement.
Foyer & Entry Sequence: A
centrally placed foyer anchors the ground floor composition, establishing the
east-west axis from which every space in the home is organized. The entry
sequence is deliberate — the axis draws the inhabitant inward, building
anticipation before the plan opens up.
Drawing Room: The double-height drawing
room occupies the north-east corner, designed to capitalize on soft diffused
northern light through a generous corner window. The verticality of this volume
creates an immediate sense of arrival and openness, acting as a powerful
counterpoint to the plot's constrained footprint.
Staircase & Transition Zone: A
sculptural staircase anchors the center of the plan — cantilevered marble
treads with a glass and bronze balustrade — functioning as both vertical
connector and architectural statement. It marks the spatial transition between
the entry zone and the social heart of the home.
Dining Area & Courtyard: The axis resolves in a double-height dining area that opens toward an internal north-facing courtyard. The courtyard serves as the climatic and emotional core of the residence, drawing natural light, ventilation, and greenery deep into the plan and animating the home's most communal space.
Bedrooms: On the ground floor, the guest bedroom is positioned near the entry in the south-east corner, while the parents' bedroom occupies the quiet north-west corner adjacent to the courtyard. On the first floor, the children's bedroom sits above the guest room and the master bedroom mirrors the parents' room below — a clear generational layering that is both functional and spatially deliberate.
First-Floor Living & Study: A family living room and a study on the first floor are positioned to overlook the double-height drawing room below — a sectional move that keeps the upper level visually connected to the life of the home, creating a sense of continuity and shared spatial experience across floors.
Material & Color Palette
Exterior: Warm exposed red brick across the
primary facade, board-formed grey concrete framing the upper volume, and a
full-height glass curtain wall opening the drawing room to the landscape.
Interior Floors:
Grey veined marble flooring flowing continuously across the ground level,
establishing the axis underfoot and unifying the plan.
Wall Finishes: Walnut-finish wood
panelling in the corridor and key living areas, paired with clean white plaster
surfaces to balance warmth and openness.
Accents & Hardware:
Bronze detailing in the staircase railing, ceiling mirror inset above the
dining table, door hardware, and light fixtures — a consistent metallic
language that adds refinement without excess.
Achieving Scale on a Constrained Plot: The primary challenge was creating spatial grandeur within a 45 × 100 ft footprint. This was resolved through double-height volumes, a central courtyard, and a first-floor sectional overlook — devices that manufacture vertical and visual space rather than relying on floor area.
Multi-Generational Zoning: Accommodating parents, children, and guests within a single cohesive home required precise planning. The solution was a vertical stacking strategy where each generation occupies a clearly defined zone, while shared spaces — the courtyard, dining area, and drawing room — bring the family together naturally.
Climate Response: Himmatnagar's semi-arid climate and intense summer heat demanded careful orientation of openings. The corner window captures soft northern light without direct solar gain, the courtyard promotes cross-ventilation, and the glass curtain wall is positioned on the elevation most beneficial for the interior volumes.
A central east-west axis that sequences the home as a spatial narrative — from threshold to courtyard — giving the plan its clarity and calm
A double-height drawing room with a corner window, designed to borrow northern light and vertical sky within a compressed urban plot
A sculptural staircase that functions as both a vertical connector and a piece of architectural craft — the visual centerpiece of the ground floor
An internal courtyard that reinterprets the traditional Gujarati residential typology as a living climatic and social device
A first-floor sectional overlook into the double-height drawing room, creating a visual dialogue between levels that makes the interior feel connected and generously scaled
A material palette of exposed
brick, concrete, glass, marble, walnut, and bronze — each material chosen for
how it performs over time and feels to live with daily
Project USP
A Brick Courtyard House stands as a demonstration of what disciplined planning and a brave section can achieve on a constrained urban plot. The interplay of a strong central axis, double-height volumes, and a north-facing courtyard creates a home that is simultaneously spacious and intimate, contemporary and climatically grounded. By integrating a sculptural staircase, a first-floor overlook, and a material palette that shifts from bold on the exterior to warm within, Architerio has produced a residence that redefines what a compact family home in Himmatnagar can feel like — not through size, but through the quality of its light, the generosity of its sequence, and how naturally life settles into its spaces.
