Terracotta & Tradition: An Ethnic Duplex Rooted in Bishnupur’s Earth by CeeBee Design Studio

 

This duplex reflects the homeowners’ deep appreciation for Indian heritage, craftsmanship, and meaningful design. CeeBee Design Studio shaped the home around the element of earth, using authentic terracotta sourced from Bishnupur and Bankura and crafted by local artisans. The highlight is a dramatic double-height terracotta wall in the living room that visually anchors the home and overlooks the mandir. Thoughtfully planned spaces—including a cultural landing with a library and piano, a serene mandir, and artifact displays—blend tradition with contemporary functionality. Natural textures, greenery, and subtle lighting create a warm, grounded atmosphere where heritage, spirituality, and modern living coexist seamlessly

This duplex residence was envisioned as more than just a contemporary home—it was designed as a reflection of the homeowners’ deep appreciation for Indian heritage, craftsmanship, and authenticity. The clients have always been drawn to handmade objects and meaningful artifacts, often collecting pieces from different parts of the world while maintaining a strong belief in supporting Indian artisans. While their aesthetic preferences leaned toward clean lines, subtle palettes, and modern functionality, emotionally they were connected to materials that felt rooted in culture and tradition. CeeBee Design Studio translated this vision into a design language centred around the element of earth, creating a home where cultural identity and contemporary living coexist seamlessly.

From the beginning, the guiding principle of the project was clear: to create a space that feels deeply personal, grounded, and meaningful without sacrificing modern comfort and practicality. Instead of relying on purely decorative elements, the design approach focused on integrating craftsmanship directly into the architecture of the home. This philosophy naturally led to the use of terracotta as a central material. Known for its raw beauty, warmth, and timeless connection to Indian architectural history, terracotta brings a tactile and emotional quality that factory-produced finishes often lack. Each piece carries the subtle imprint of the artisan’s hand, and as light interacts with its surface throughout the day, the material reveals changing textures and shadows that bring life to the interiors.

Once terracotta was chosen as the defining element, the next step was to source it authentically. The design team turned to Bishnupur and Bankura in West Bengal—regions celebrated for their rich legacy of terracotta craftsmanship, historic temple architecture, and the iconic Bankura horse. Rather than working through commercial suppliers, CeeBee Design Studio collaborated directly with grassroots artisans from these areas. This direct engagement not only ensured authenticity but also supported traditional craft communities while preserving the originality of the material.

To translate design ideas into handcrafted elements, the studio prepared detailed AutoCAD drawings and scaled elevations that were shared with the artisans. These drawings guided the creation of custom clay panels through traditional processes including moulding, sun drying, and kiln firing. Many of the tile patterns drew inspiration from temple carvings, mythological motifs, and the sculptural form of the Bankura ghora. Instead of repeating generic patterns, each tile composition was thoughtfully developed to tell a story rooted in regional culture and heritage.

The most striking feature of the home is the dramatic double-height terracotta wall in the living room, which visually connects both floors of the duplex while overlooking the mandir area. Designing this wall required extensive elevation planning to maintain balance, rhythm, and proportion across a large vertical surface. Several layout options were explored before the final composition was chosen. The wall is composed of terracotta tiles in varying sizes, textures, and motifs, arranged almost like a mural that celebrates handcrafted artistry.

Even structural elements were carefully integrated into the design. A beam that runs across the wall was seamlessly blended using terracotta texture paint so that the visual continuity of the surface remained uninterrupted. Lighting played a critical role in enhancing the impact of this feature. Wall washers and concealed cove lights highlight the sculptural relief of the tiles, allowing the wall to transform throughout the day—from a softly textured surface in daylight to a dramatic focal point at night. This terracotta installation ultimately became the visual and emotional anchor of the home.

The foyer introduces the narrative of the house immediately upon entry. A handcrafted terracotta-inspired textured wall forms the backdrop, complemented by a floating wooden console, brass accents, and carefully placed greenery. A terracotta Durga element further strengthens the spiritual and cultural character of the space. This composition sets the tone for the rest of the home, establishing an atmosphere that is earthy, calm, and rooted in tradition.

Greenery plays an essential role throughout the residence, reinforcing the connection between architecture and nature. Indoor plants near the living spaces, balcony planters, and thoughtfully integrated greens add freshness and soften the architectural forms. One of the most creative interventions in the home can be seen beneath the staircase. Instead of using the area purely for storage, it was transformed into a sculptural installation combining planters, lighting, and concealed services. This approach allowed even a typically overlooked space to contribute meaningfully to the design story.

The staircase itself becomes a storytelling feature within the home. A textured grey backdrop supports a gallery wall displaying photographs and memories from the homeowners’ lives, turning the vertical transition into a personal narrative. This design gesture ensures that the architecture reflects not just aesthetic ideas but also the experiences and journeys of the people who live within it.

Adjacent to the staircase, the first-floor landing—often an underutilised transitional space in duplex homes—was carefully reimagined. Instead of leaving it as a simple corridor, CeeBee Design Studio transformed the area into a multifunctional cultural zone. A veneer-finished bookshelf combining open and closed storage was installed along the wall, with a dedicated niche beneath for the homeowners’ piano. This thoughtful intervention converted the landing into a library and creative corner, ensuring that circulation spaces were not wasted but instead enriched daily living.

Within the same landing zone, the mandir was thoughtfully positioned in alignment with vastu principles. Rather than isolating it in a separate room, the design integrates the mandir into the architectural flow while still maintaining a sense of sanctity and prominence. Traditional carved wooden pillars, cornices, and miniature temple doors with bells create a sacred threshold. The back panel features an intricately designed backlit corian floral pattern that emits a soft glow, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere. Positioned near the double-height wall and chandelier, the mandir naturally becomes the emotional centre of the home.

The living, dining, and balcony areas were designed to remain open and breathable, allowing light and airflow to move freely through the space. Clean architectural lines maintain visual calm, while subtle splashes of colour in furniture and accessories add warmth and vibrancy. Brass accents and handcrafted décor elements complement the terracotta surfaces, reinforcing the balance between ethnic character and contemporary sophistication.

A dedicated artifact display wall was also created to showcase the homeowners’ personal collection. The background was intentionally kept minimal so that each object could stand out as a focal point, allowing the artifacts themselves to tell their stories without visual clutter.

The bedrooms continue the overall narrative in a quieter, more intimate manner. Veneer and PU finishes create a warm yet contemporary environment, while grooved wardrobe shutters introduce subtle texture. Sliding wardrobe systems improve circulation within compact layouts, ensuring functionality while maintaining design continuity. Balanced wood tones, soft colour accents, and layered lighting create restful spaces that remain connected to the larger design concept of the home.

Throughout the project, every intervention—from terracotta feature walls to furniture layouts—was resolved through detailed drawings, elevations, and visualisations. This careful planning ensured that the final execution matched the design intent with precision. Lighting design was also treated as an essential element, sculpting surfaces and highlighting textures while creating layered atmospheres that shift between bright functionality and intimate warmth.

Ultimately, this duplex stands as a seamless dialogue between heritage and modern living. Through the authentic use of terracotta sourced from Bishnupur and Bankura, the reinterpretation of cultural motifs such as the Bankura horse, and the thoughtful integration of handcrafted elements, CeeBee Design Studio created a home that feels both timeless and contemporary. The direct collaboration with artisans ensured that the project did not merely reference tradition—it actively engaged with it.
